Aloha 'Oe/Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat

Well, I got a few days behind...oh well, can't win em all! :-)
Day 3 was a lazy/fun/entertaining day.  We started off the morning by sleeping in (finally) and a shopping expedition in Lahaina.  I have always loved the Banyan tree that takes up the entire courtyard in front of the Courthouse, which mean I had to, of course, show it off to Tim's family!

We had lunch at the famous Hard Rock Cafe, with an excellent view of the ocean...too bad we were sitting in front of the window and therefore had a horrible backlighting problem!

That explains all the shiny-ness...right...right?!  Following our shopping excursion, we headed to the beach for some R&R and body-boarding.

Our beach had a lack of waves, as it is better known for its snorkeling.  Tim decided to be our puller instead and Laurie and I had a great time being dragged over the coral reefs.

Tim and I had planned on giving a luau to the family for Christmas and this is the perfect night for that.  We had a table at the Old Lahaina Luau, which is done pretty much right on the water.  In fact, the stage is in the round and the only backdrop is the ocean!  The dancers even used the beach area during the show.  It was fantastic!

Waiting for the show to start

Day four was pretty much all about whale watching and snorkeling and boy did we do both of those!  The sea was very choppy for our journey out to Lanai and back to shore, there were definitely people feeling it on the way back (if you know what I mean)!  The whales were out in FULL FORCE the entire day, in fact, we even witnessed a "Maui Mugging!" Care to guess what that is? It's when a whale literally comes up to a boat a starts to "play" with it.  I was SO thankful that we were on a large catamaran and not the tiny pontoon boat the whale was playing with, there were completely at the whale's mercy.  Too close for comfort, in my opinionn!

We went with the Pacific Whale Foundation, so in addition to great whale watching and snorkeling, we got a play-by-play of what was happening in the ocean.  I, unfortunately, don't have any pictures of us snorkeling, but just know that I stayed in the water the entire time Tim did!  A huge accomplishment for someone who is ridiculously afraid of fish! :-)

After our snorkel adventure, we were completely worn out, so we took the afternoon to nap and lounge around at the hotel before Tim and my final Hawaii dinner at the Pineapple Grill.

We got to sit outside and had a great view of the beautiful golf course and Patti had her first Shirley Temple...how can someone go so long without this delicious drink! Oh and she liked it, of course! :-)

We finished off the evening with ice cream and an impromptu photo shoot under the banyan tree in Lahaina!

We left the next day after a wonderful breakfast with the family and final walk on the beach.  We spent the evening/New Year's Eve celebrating in Portland...but that a story for tomorrow!

Until then...HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Land of a Thousand S-Curves

Tim got to experience the one of the ultimate driving experiences today...The Road to Hana!  Yesterday, he quickly volunteered to be the driver, and although he didn't get to drive a manual, he did have a blast navigating the some 600 curves and 56 one-lane bridges!

Starting out on our Journey

Our first stop on the Road was at the Twin Falls, just past mile marker 2.  The guidebook described the hike as "gentle," where you could "easily get into the water."  Maybe in Hawaii they have a different definition of those two phrases?!  There were many slippery rocks (we saw a lady who had fallen down), bridges wide enough for only one person and steep mud hills!

Waterfall #1, the more difficult one to get to...kind of...

Waterfall #2, the easier one to walk to...until you get to the part where you tread through water...we didn't go that far, but it was still beautiful from a distance!

After hiking back to the car, we continued on Highway 360 towards the Garden of Eden.  This small botanical garden had a few lookouts, several birds (including peacocks), and some beautiful native plants.

Some of the MANY peacocks roaming the gardens...

Tim & Patti enjoying the view, it looks down on the Keopuka Rock, which was featured in the opening sequence of "Jurassic Park."

Puohokamoa Falls

From the gardens, we continued heading Southwest-ish.  We got REALLY close to a few vehicles...

The next stop was Pua'a Ka'a State Park, where we got to see another waterfall, this time a bit more up close and personal...

As soon as Tim & I got to the water's edge, a brave guy full-on belly-flopped into the swimming hole! That was enough to deter me from trying cliff diving, even if he was trying to do it on purpose!

Finally, we made it to the place I had been looking forward to visiting all day...Waianapanapa State Park! (Kudos to the first person who can tell/show me how this is pronounced and then say it 10X fast!) This park is best known for its sea arches, blow hole and BLACK SAND BEACH!

The view from the parking lot.

We spent about 5-10 minutes standing here watching a pod of Humpback whales breaching!  It was an amazing sight!  After that, we trekked down to the beach, where Tim and I proceeded to fall off a small lava rock and gash ourselves open.  (Don't worry Mom, we're fine!)  It was decided that the best way to heal would be a good dose of wave jumping, and while I'm not completely healed, it was an excellent distraction!

Patti and me jumping waves in the vast ocean

After our beach time, we took a hike over to the rocks in the background of the picture, which is where the blow hole is located.  Unfortunately, it was not blowing today that we could see.

Eventually we made it all the way to Hana, where we drove through the tiny town and checked out the local market and a very nice resort, before we decided to head back.  We ended up being directed around a small rock slide and almost got run over by a large truck, but Tim was still having a great time!

To finish off the day, we headed back to Lahaina and ONO Gelato! There is really nothing better than ending a day with gelato.  Yummy!

Hawaii 5-0

After a WONDERFUL Christmas Eve/Day celebration with my family (which hopefully one of them will post about...) we got to catch a flight to Maui with the Wells!

With all the craziness of packing and preparing for our grand Japanese adventure, we actually started to forget we were even going to be in Maui for the post-holiday season.  But we sure are glad that we came, the weather is perfect and we're thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to relax! As a matter of fact, I'm writing this on the patio of our hotel room!! :-)

Our first flight was a commuter to Portland, where we got to ride on this little guy:

We knew about the Coug and Huskies planes, but we also saw an OSU one...I guess it's good the airline doesn't discriminate.

Once we finally landed in Hawaii (after some painfully turbulent rides), we got our rental cars...

I am IN LOVE with the tree lined roads of Hawaii.

We had dinner that evening at the hotel, which coincidentally, is the same hotel I stayed at 10 years ago!

This morning, we had planned a helicopter tour of the island.  Tim and I felt that on our honeymoon, the helicopter tour had helped significantly in getting the layout of the land and let us enjoy our time that much more, so it was a MUST for this trip!

Normally I would also post a collage of pictures from the helicopter, but since I'm on Tim's computer and I don't have time to download that program, I'll just post a little teaser...

Don't worry...we didn't stare at clouds the whole time!

Until next time...ALOHA!

The Storm before the Calm...

We are now in "go" mode for the next two weeks before the holidays and our big trip(s)!  Of course that also means that our house is in shambles.  Our front door has been leaking cold air, our microwave broke last week, and we found out we have to replace the tubing to our washer/dryer and insulate all of our pipes! Not to mention all of the packing and planning that goes into moving abroad for half the year...and all of this needs to be done before Christmas eve!  Can you say overload?!

Putting a new seal on the door for the 3rd time and in 32 degree weather!

All smiles...

The new microwave...much more stylish than the old white one!

Like I said, shambles, and this is just the dining room, you don't wanna see the rest of the condo...

Insulating the pipes...

So we're keeping busy! It's very scary for the both of us to think that soon we will be in a completely foreign country, but at the same time, we're getting very excited.  Our life currently consists of about twenty different lists, all posted on the refrigerator, all needing to be done by the time I leave...

We'll see if that actually happens...

Christmas came early...

Because of our hectic schedule this holiday season, Tim and I decided it would be best to exchange gifts early.  Luckily, we both wanted just one thing to make our journey to Japan easier...

As you can see, Tim's present arrived before we got our tree/cactus.

What did we get???

A netbook for Timmy!

A Kindle for me!

Now all I have to do is load books on to my Kindle and Tim has already transferred all of his files from his old computer and is in love with his tiny computer.  Now all we have to do is finish all of our other christmas shopping!

"It's Prickly!"

Today was the official start of Christmas season here at the TeAm Wells home.  Why?  Because we got our Christmas tree!!

For a variety of reasons, Tim & Patti came down to visit us for the day.  We spent some time exploring houses and then took them to The-Most-Amazing-Christmas-Tree-Farm-Ever.  We drove through a few fields before spotting the Blue Spruce.  I was immediately drawn to the actual blue color of the tree!

With our selected tree, pre-chop down.

Almost immediately, Tim noticed that this wasn't a "user-friendly" tree. It's prickly.  Actually, the needles are kind of like real needles.  Very sharp, pointy, I-want-to-draw-your-blood needles.  But we (and by we, I mean Tim and Timmy) soldiered on!

This was one of the reasons I wanted to go tree shopping today...I didn't have to do any of the dirty work!
Thanks Tim and Timmy!! :-)

Timmy: "I don't want to carry it, it's prickly!"
Me: "You'll be fine!" ::snicker, snicker:: (Little did I know...)

The guys did a great job hoisting it onto the car for the trip back to the entrance/exit and the official car tie-down crew (aka: the local Boy Scout troop).

We had it wrapped so it was easier to transport and set-up in the house.  So it became the Treepedo! We needed extra protection to unwrap and decorate it:

Yes, we did wear gloves the entire time.  And it still hurt.  Poor Timmy had the worst time, evidently the Blue Spruce is the only thing he's allergic to and so he ended up with some hives on his hands from the stabbings.  Luckily, I am allergic to everything and had some anti-histamine cream lying around.

Of course, once we decorated the tree, we had to take the mandatory photo.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
