Japan 2015 - We made it!

Hello!

We made it to Japan! Of course, no move across the world come without a few hiccups, but we're all in one piece and things are settling down.
I still need to post Egan's 7 month post and I want to get some pictures of our new place, but I thought I would share our travel-day adventures!

SMALL INTERRUPTION...I totally started this post about three weeks ago. It's taken a while to get into the swing of things! I'm hoping to crank out a few posts tonight while Tim and Egan sleep.

The Wandering Wells actually left home on December 31st and headed to my parents' house for the New Years celebration/my sister's birthday. I wish I had gotten a picture of my parents' car at our house, but you'll have to believe me when I say it was STUFFED! Egan and I were both holding things on our lap in the backseat. We spent the evening playing games and waiting for midnight.
On January 2nd, we loaded the car back up (with less stuff!) and my parents took us to the airport. Tim and I were crossing our fingers that we would get seats next to each other, but that wasn't in the cards. Our flight was full and we were on opposite sides of the plane...until the desk agent pulled out a little deal for us. For $500 a ticket we could upgrade to business class. Um...WORTH IT! It was our joint Christmas gift and it was seriously THE.BEST.GIFT.EVER.

We weren't next to each other, but Tim was behind my side tray and we could easily move Egan between us. I also had a big floor space next to me where he played for a while and when it was time to nap, we could recline our seats (or lay all the way down!) and snooze! It was absolutely glorious!

For our meals we got to choose between "International" and "Japanese" food. I went for the International menu and Tim choose the Japanese. My first meal was FOUR courses!

We also had a "order anytime" menu and about 6 hours into the flight I had a delicious bowl of Ramen. Our last "light meal" was only one course, but it was a very good ravioli with chicken. Normally plane food makes me feel sick and constipated, but this was the real deal! I have never felt better getting off the plane!

At one point Tim had taken Egan and I was watching a movie/napping. The lights were turned down and I was feeling pretty good when I realized that one of the flight attendants had Egan and was walking away with him! Of course I was a little startled, but she took him to the kitchen area and, I kid you not, every flight attendant on the plane paid him a visit. She probably held him for 10 minutes! And he spent the entire time flirting and cooing at them.
Unfortunately (and I'm totally serious) the flight had to end and we arrived at Narita in the afternoon on January 3rd. This began a serious love/hate relationship with our stroller. Because we were the first ones off the plane, our stroller was not at the gate waiting for us. We tried to ask and they pointed down the gangway...so we walked...and then realized that we had left our stroller there. Tim had to go back and get it from the plane, which was quite a ways back. (Hate) BUT because we had a stroller, they let us skip the entire customs line and go through the family gate. (Love) We got our luggage and headed out of the secure area so Tim could check in with the PSNS people and we could get our train tickets. We ended up being the first people on the later train...AKA the train after all our co-travelers. Ugh. So we headed down to the station, which has little barriers set up to keep people from stealing the airport trolleys. They're just small enough that they also keep you from getting a stroller through. (HATE.) Eventually we got on the Narita Express and headed towards our new home.
Despite the challenges of two large suitcases, a stroller that we had to fold up and carry (Hate) and a myriad of carry-ons (including a Mr. Egan), we got to our place around 7pm. I was so surprised when we walked off the train and straight into our building - it's literally 100 steps from the front door. Check-in was a breeze and we even had some groceries waiting for us. This ended up being EXTREMELY helpful because the next day was a MESS.

There are no pictures, because I was too busy taking care of an extremely cranky, tired, AND teething baby and a husband who was exploding from both ends. It was not a fun day in the Wells household.

Seattle Aquarium

The Monday following our trip to Arizona, I met up with some friends at the Seattle Aquarium.
You know you have good friends when they say "Hi, I'm going to steal your baby" and then they proceed to entertain him throughout the entire trip.
We visited the tide pools, but didn't partake in any touching. I have no doubt that Egan would have tried to chew on everything!
The jellyfish were quite mesmerizing.
But, unfortunately, Egan has a ways to go before he's the same height as a sixgill shark.
He loved the fish tanks and the fish loved him! This is one of many times they swam right up to the glass to say hello.
Egan was clearly happy with all the attention he received!
Proof I was there...
This seal was absolutely hilarious - he kept posing for pictures and came right up to the glass to play with Egan.
After the Aquarium, we headed into downtown for lunch. I didn't realize it at the time, but it was kind of ironic that we ended up getting sushi... :-)

Arizona or Bust!

Last weekend we took Egan on his very first plane ride! Egan's GG Olga and GG Ed live in Tucson, so we flew to down to Phoenix (and drove to Tucson) to visit them!
Our flight was at 8:30pm, but we were delayed 30 minutes, so we didn't land until after midnight in Phoenix. Thankfully we had the foresight to book a room close to the airport!

The next (late) morning, Tim trekked to the rental car place and picked up our BUICK for the weekend. We had a really easy drive down to Tucson - Egan slept most of the way.
Of course we had to get a picture with a cactus!
That night one of my cousins was getting married, so we joined my aunts and various other cousins for a beautiful wedding in Old Town Tucson.
Egan had a great time being adored by many people and we were very happy to be able to celebrate with the family!
On Saturday morning, we headed to GG Olga and GG Ed's place.

They were excited to meet our little guy. GG Ed even broke out his harmonica and guitar and serenaded Egan!
GG Olga gave some great eskimo kisses.
We are so happy that we could take our little man down to Tucson to meet his great-grandparents before our big trip to Japan!
Unfortunately, we still had a morning flight out of Phoenix, so we left in the late afternoon to drive back. We grabbed dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe and took a walk around what I think was the downtown area. They are clearly getting ready for the Super Bowl!
Egan liked sleeping in the King-sized beds with us - much more room to wiggle around!
Our flight was operated by Southwest and despite their announcements that we had a full flight, no one sat with us and Egan got to chill out in his own seat for the flight. One passenger even commented, as he was walking by, that there was "no way in hell" someone would sit with us. Evidently it pays to fly Southwest when you have a small child!
Oh, and you can guarantee that I considered purchasing Egan his own ticket for our flight to and from Japan after this trip - it was so much easier with an extra seat! Hopefully the bassinet we reserved for the flight over works just as well!

Baby Reunion!

We were so lucky to have met 4 other new-parent couples in our childbirth class. Thankfully, we have all kept in touch and have made it a priority to meet up every few months!

This past Sunday was our second gathering and, let me tell you, babies do not like to cooperate for group pictures!
This picture cracks me up - Egan is trying to turn over, Miss R is looking at him like "what are you doing?!" Mr. R and Mr. L are clinging to each other, while Miss J is just chilling out.
We were all trying our best to get them to cooperate. The magic trick - a chime ball that looks like a crab. They were all captivated.
Here they are in order from L to R by birth date - Egan is the biggest one, but they're all growing like weeds!
Group tummy time included a lot of grabbing - Egan was especially enamored with Miss R's hair ribbon.

Egan's 1st Halloween

Can you guess who Egan dressed up as for Halloween? If you thought Charlie Brown, you're correct!

Our local library had an "all ages" story time in the morning, which included trick or treating throughout the library. I invited my friend L and her daughter E to join us. E was a banana, but the costume inhibited her ability to crawl and she ended up looking more like a (adorable) banana slug.
The library was absolutely PACKED with children and their parents. The story time room was "standing room only" and by the time we got there, they were only letting in older kids who could go unsupervised. Thankfully the staff quickly put together a second story time in the children's section of the library and we were able to partake in those festivities.

After Tim got home from work, we took some family pictures with our pumpkins (see the previous post for more on those).
This kid makes the craziest faces.

The Downtown Business Association puts together a "Safe Trick or Treat" for the city. They shut down several blocks of the downtown core and almost all of the shops were giving out candy. Most of the owners were also dressed up. The theater, The Admiral, had a DJ set up and one of the local dance schools was performing in the street. There was also a free carnival set up in one of the parking garages, but since we didn't have any kids with us who could actually play games, we decided to skip that.
Egan did a great job pulling candy out of the bowls, but he didn't quite understand (or care) that you're supposed to take the wrapper off before stuffing in your mouth...

We met E and her parents downtown too - it was more fun trick or treating with two babies!

Egan will learn the importance of the obligatory family selfie...
We quickly walked home before it got dark and passed out candy to our 12 trick or treaters until around 8:45. This was a record year for us - the most we ever got in our condo was 2!

Pumpkin Carving

The Tuesday before Halloween was dedicated to carving pumpkins! All three of us were responsible for one, but Egan needed a little help, since his was a little big...
But he found the innards to be pretty amusing.
Tim's pumpkin was a little...rotten...when he cut it open, so after pouring out the guts, the gloves were necessary for handling!
Egan wanted to help Tim carve my (not rotten!) pumpkin...
but settled for a cute picture instead!
Here's our trio - can you spot the theme?
The bonus: delicious roasted pumpkins seeds and a house that smells like fall!
